CHICKEN SHAWARMA RECIPE | HOMEMADE CHICKEN SHAWARMA

Shawarma is a well-known most popular Arab dish. this recipe is prepared by grilling chicken /meat on a spit. It is prepared by stacking strips of marinated meat and fats on a vertical spit, and it is resulting in a large block of meat & fats. The block of meat is slowly grilled while the spit rotates. Grilled chicken/meat is shredded off from the spit when needed and served as an appetizer or used to make shawarma rolls.

Firstly, I thought making this recipe at home was just impossible since it needs a spit. I also felt this much healthier than the shawarma made on spits as they grilled for long hours(as long as a day) and the usage of heavy fats. Chicken shawarma done on the splits tasty and delicious due to the slow grilling on a low flame which actually keeps it juicy and tender. To make the meat tender and keep it juicy I prefer yogurt in this chicken shawarma recipe.

INGREDIENTS (240 ml cup used):

INGREDIENTS for CHICKEN SHAWARMA:

  • 250 grams of chicken breast or thigh (choose tender boneless meat).
  • 1-1/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil.
  • 1-1/2 garlic clove minced -1 large.
  • 1/2 tsp jeera or cumin.
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder or paprika.
  • 1/4 tsp allspice.
  • 1 pinch of turmeric powder.
  • 2 pinches of cinnamon powder.
  • salt as needed.
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 2 tbsp greek yogurt or hung curd(not sour, fresh).
Optional:
  • 1 onion(chopped) quartered layers separated.
  • 1 tomato quartered deseeded.

HOW TO MAKE THE RECIPE:
Preparation for Chicken shawarma recipe:
  • Heat a pan with 1/2 tbsp olive oil on a high heat. When the pan is heated, place the chicken and flip to cook on all the sides evenly.
  • When the chicken is tender cooked. shred it on the pan with a wooden spoon.cook for 2 minutes.
  • Kept aside and use the same pan to grill quarter(1/4) layered onions and deseeded tomatoes.
  • Serve chicken shawarma as an appetizer with yogurt garlic sauce.
Making shawarma wrap/roll:
  • Spread sauce on the pita bread.Place lettuce and then chicken, grilled onions, tomatoes and roll it up.
